Despite Captain Marfiak's assurances, the people in SAG Alfa felt vulnerable. Commander Glenn Montgomery, USN, commanding officer of the Curts, recalls that during the first week of the war an unidentified aircraft headed directly for the Curts, seemingly on an attack profile. The aircraft showed no IFF. Montgomery's Tactical Action Officer requested permission to fire; however, other than the aircraft's profile, nothing indicated it was hostile. Montgomery decided not to fire. He told his crew, "If we eat this one, it's my responsibility." The aircraft flew right over the Curts; it was a MarCent EA-6B with four aircrew on board. More than a year later, Montgomery decided the critical factor in his decision had been the absence of intelligence. Based on his experience, he could not believe an Iraqi aircraft could detect the Curts without U.S. intelligence or his own sensors warning him.
The Leftwich had a similar experience, when a target emitting no IFF signal approached her. Her Operations Officer recalled that at the last second before she would have fired, an electronic warfare operator, analyzing the aircraft's radar emissions, called out, "It's an EA-6B."
Despite several such nervous intercepts, not a single friendly aircraft was fired upon over the water. Although we do not mention these Red Crown operations after each strike, the reader should realize that he had to maintain vigilance every hour of every day for the duration of Desert Storm..

В той книжке ещё одна любопытная история про то, как на войне "всё идёт не так". Управление истребителями БВП осуществлялось не с АВАКС'ов или "Хокаев", а "по старинке" - с крейсеров. С АВАКС'ами возникли типичные проблемы на стыке двух видов ВС. "Хокаи" вроде как испытывали проблемы с работой у берега (интересно, что сказал бы по этому поводу Вудвард)).
На выходе - единственный случай, когда пара иракских "Миражей" таки полетела над Персидским заливом (и, видимо, собиралась атаковать американцев "Экзосетами"), закончился тем, что противника перехватил саудовский F-15 под управлением Е-3. Бывшие ближе к иракцам F-14 БВП на цель навести не удалось - в том числе потому, что из всех американских кораблей только один имел короткий РЛ-контакт с целью, управлявший же БВП "Уорден" иракские самолёты не видел, и электронной картинки с АВАКС'а не получал, только голосовую информацию.
