The F-2 main role is to fulfill maritime strike operations, obviously the fighter support aircraft is also capable to launch precision strike bombings/land attack missions according to the needs (see North Korea).
Just for example in the CAS role the F-2 is capable to carry up to 12 Mk-82s, CBU-87/B cluster bombs, JDAMs, 70/127 mm rocket pods + a 300 gallons external fuel tank, while in the CAP and interceptor roles is capable to loads up to 4 beyond visual range and 4 short range air to air missiles + a 300 gallons external fuel tank.
The F-2 Super Kai was a proposed upgrade by General Dynamics comparable to the F-16E/F presented in the 2004 Yokohama based Japan Aerospace Exhibition, so far the plan has not been adopted, considering the consistent domestic upgrades that the F-15 fleet is receving the F-2 could be upgraded domestically if needs would come.

Англоязычная вики считает что F-2 получили на вооружение Mitsubishi AAM-4... from FY2010. Сколько серийных AAM-4 закуплено для японских воздушных сил самообороны кстати тот ещё вопрос.
