Leading the GPB Drivers at 6:00PM GMT, Friday, August 3, 2007...

Here's what's driving the GPB right now:

China Detail

6:15PM GMT, August 3: As Shanghai Cooperation Organization annual summit nears, analysts point out that its joint military exercises are the first of its kind for a regional political organization...marking a change in global balances with China and Russia garnering more power; Analysts posit that the flush of media frenzy over Chinese product scares receive undue attention from American media because of a general negativity towards Chinese industry and economic power rather than a genuine concern over product safety.

Russia Detail

8:15AM GMT, August 3: Other Arctic Ocean nations contest Russia's territorial and energy claims in the region with both Canada and the US dismissing Moscow's expedition to plant a flag on the ocean floor;
Russia continues to put pressure on Exxon-Mobil's operations on Sakhalin, saying that it wants the company to ship to Russia and not other Asian markets;
Russian analysts continue to remark on efforts by both Fatah and Hamas to gain support from Moscow, pointing to Russian's increased diplomatic capital in the Middle East.

meanwhile Russia announces that it intends to renew its naval presence in the Mediterranean in order to protect its interests in the region.

You can't go around the world these days dropping a flag somewhere. This isn't the 14th or 15th century." Canada's Foreign Minister Peter Mackay addressing Russia's expedition to "cl... MORE

The GPB tracks how well global players use power to advance their policy goals. The chart covers the day indicated in the date bar above the chart and is updated each evening. Note that the chart does not move until it is updated. Clicking on an icon links to supporting data that is updated and expanded continually throughout the day.

The system tracks thousands of news media, academic, governmental and other sources. The relative position of the players are driven by opinion, events, and other soft and hard factors. The system does not count articles like a "buzz meter." See "What's this" for more.
