Another coca-containing product ultimately destined to become
internationally famous was the soft drink, Coca Cola. Along with many
other cola drinks of the period (1886-1903), it used the
cocaine-containing extract of coca leaves together with other in-gredients
for flavoring. Originally advertised as a patent medicine when introduced
in 1886 -- "a valuable Brain tonic and cure for all nervous affections v
SICK HEADACHE, NEURALGIA, HYSTERIA, MELANCHOLY, etc." -- it was later
promoted simply as a soft drink. By 1903, the manufacturer abandoned the
use of cocaine-containing syrup, resorting instead to a flavoring derived
from decocainized coca leaves (Musto, 1973).

By 1890, cocaine had become the primary ingredient in many elixirs and
other "restoratives" that claimed to provide relief from depression and a
multitude of ailments. It was an ingredient in cigars, cigarettes, chewing
gum, and several "tonics," most notably Coca-Cola (today's Coca-Cola does
not contain cocaine).
