Peptide Conjugates of Benz(a)Pyrene in Plants
Presented by Member of the Academy T. Beridze, December 28, 2001
Abstract. The metabolism of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) _ 7,10-14C-benz(a)pyrene in seedlings of corn (Zea mays L.), pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L.), bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), pea (Pisum sativum L.) was investigated. The BP is absorbed by plants through roots and then transported through stem to leaves. Part of BP is accumulated in vacuoles with inclusion of carbon radioactive atom in low molecular weight substances _ organic acids, amino acids, peptides of low molecular weight and proteins. The aromatic rings of part of BP are entirely destructed which specifies the isolation of radioactive carbon dioxide. The BP metabolites _ oxy-, dioxy- and quinone derivatives form conjugates with low molecular peptides. In BP-treated plants in comparison with control plants the content of low molecular weight peptides is increased. http://www.acnet.ge/moambe/New/pub14/165_2.htm
