It would also eliminate the ugliest symptom for some shooters using the Garand, the renowned "M-1" thumb." This was an affliction resulting from the fully sprung bolt's smashing the thumb under many hundreds of pounds of pressure as the follower was depressed to close the rifle. Unless the shooter's hand was properly positioned, his thumb could end up bruised or even broken.
