Iskander passes state trials
Nikolai Novichkov JDW Correspondent
Moscow
The Russian Armed Forces and the KBM Design Bureau of Kolomna have completed trials of the Iskander tactical missile system, according to Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov.
A total of 13 Iskander launches have been made, based on various tactical scenarios. The last, in July and August, were made in flat and ballistic trajectories, Ivanov noted. In line with Russia's National Defence Order (NDO), the Russian Army plans in 2005 to procure several Iskander systems to form a missile brigade.
Russian defence sources said that for field trials the army will initially receive one battalion of Iskander systems comprising four 9P78E self-propelled launchers, four 9T250E transporter-loader vehicles, four 9S552 command vehicles, four 9S920 data-preparation vehicles, maintenance vehicles and 16 surface-to-surface missiles.
Roughly half of this package, plus two additional missiles, will be paid for by the funding allocated under the 2004 NDO.
The Iskander, which weighs 3,800kg, has an effective range of up to 280km. The system includes two missiles on the launch vehicle and two on the transporter-loader unit. Experts believe that the Iskander is able to accurately strike targets with effectiveness equal to that of a small nuclear warhead, which will substantially enhance the firepower of the army's missile battalions and brigades.
Using its inertial guidance system, the missile's circular error of probability (CEP) at the maximum range of 280km varies between 30m and 50m; using its electro-optical guidance system, the CEP varies from 5m to 7m.
