Around two prototypes for flight testing and development.

Around at least seven prottoypes used for avionics and weapons development. One or two may be static test beds.

Six evaluation aircraft made, followed by 24 series aircraft by the start of 2004. Production rate was 2 aircraft per month in 2003; it could be raised to four aircraft per month this year as a second production line in Chengdu is opened (former J-7G production line). This could add as much as 18 new aircraft estimated for this year alone.

One or two prototypes developed with two seats.
