U.S. INDUSTRY URGES ISRAEL TO BUY AEGIS
HERZLIYA, Israel 19 Feb 2004 [MENL] -- The U.S. defense industry has urged Israel to procure the Aegis sea-based missile defense system.
Executives of major U.S. defense firms have met Israeli naval commanders and Defense Ministry officials and briefed them on the capabilities of the Aegis platform. The missile defense development program financed by the U.S. Defense Department is meant to contain the Spy-1 radar and the SM-3 interceptor.
"The Israeli government needs options to deal with a broad range of threats in the future," John Shipway, president of Bath Iron Works, said. "That capability exists today and the Aegis can detect missiles that land-systems can't."
Both U.S. executives as well as U.S. defense officials have briefed Israel on the performance of the Aegis-class U.S. Navy vessels that operated during the war in Iraq. They said the Aegis system detected all of the Iraqi missiles fired toward Kuwait in late March and early April 2003.
