Re: А почитать

The French continued clandestine tank designing during German occupation. Based on the BI-bis series, the ARL was a brilliant design with lessons learned from the Germans in return oddly enough. It had a very long and accurate 90mm gun on a King Tiger-like turret with typical sloped armour and good speed for a heavy tank. It also learned the 3 man turret lesson well and had a reliable though short-ranged engine. Although it had excellent side and bogie wheel protection, the tracks were city-street thin and exposed thus vulnerable. The armour wasn’t very thick for its weight though and seemed along the lines of the T34 theory of hoping slope would make up for that somewhat. Designed during the war, it wasn’t proven to be produced until long after the war. Compared to the Anglo end-war tanks, somewhere in between the Firefly and Pershing.
Only 60 units were ever produced. This tank made its one and only public appearance at the National Day Parade on 14 July 1951.
