UKRAINE EXPECTS SHORTFALL IN ARMS TRADE REVENUES IN 2004
Kiev, 28 November: The expected amount of 2004 budget revenues from selling extra weapons and military equipment of the Ukrainian armed forces is 27 per cent down (526,96m hryvnyas, or 98m dollars) year on year. This is reflected
in the 2004 state budget which was approved by parliament yesterday. "Extra military equipment of dual purpose is worn out, obsolete and is not in demand any more," an explanatory note said.
According to a market research carried out by the Ukrspetseksport arms trade company, Ukraine could receive around 140m hryvnyas from sales of weapons and military equipment which is confirmed by the experience of arms trade in this and previous years.
In 2002 and in the first nine months of this year, Ukraine failed to sell a single one out of 6,750 armoured vehicles. Over the same period, Ukraine has sold only 12 out of 941 aircraft which brought in about 38m hryvnyas, the document said.
In the first nine months 2003, Ukraine implemented the year's plan of selling extra weapons and military equipment by 53.8 per cent (388.88m hryvnyas out of 722.67m hryvnyas).
