On the morning of 21 September, the Poles began bumping into German units south of Zamość and conducted a number of localized attacks. From the German viewpoint, they could not properly assess what they were up against and efforts to re-orient and counter-attack with VIII Armeekorps on 22 September proved fruitless because no major enemy units were encountered. The normal German tactical aggressiveness was impaired because Hitler had said that no more German blood should be shed east of the Vistula since it was being handed over to the Soviets – nobody wanted to suffer unnecessary losses in a campaign that was ending. Anders enjoyed the most success, thanks to some luck. By chance, around 0800 hours on 23 September his Nowogródzka Cavalry Brigade stumbled upon the lightly guarded command post of Generalleutnant Rudolf Koch-Erpach’s 8. Infanterie-Division near Krasnobród. After a firefight, Generalleutnant Koch-Erpach and 100 of his troops were captured – the first German general captured in the Second World War. Anders had also broken through the German cordon and he headed south with his cavalry, and their prisoners.

Видимо, ситуация у поляков была слишком печальная, чтобы даже целый немецкий генерал мог её хоть-сколько-нибудь подсластить.
