1. Я написал - идея красивая. Насколько она верная - вопрос другой.
2. В этом вопросе всегда будет неясность из-за того, что главные фигуранты - Каллаган и его штаб - в бою погибли, а сам бой имел форму кровавого бардака, как Вы справедливо заметили, что не могло не сказаться на точности и последовательности описаний.
3. Давайте попробуем что-то разобрать с помощью Грейса ("The Naval Battle off Guadalcanal. Night Action, 13 november 1942").
Сначала всё про "Атланту":
By the light of a burning destroyer at the head of the American column, Admiral Callaghan and Captain Young both recognized the Atlanta's silhouette, and at 0153 Callaghan ordered, "Cease firing own ships!'" Although intended only for the flagship, the order was broadcast to the entire American force over the TBS. The San Francisco's bridge personnel feared that their target was done for, but the Atlanta proved to be a rough ship (c. 61)
Вроде бы всё так - но дальше читаем:
When the Portland had received Callaghan's cease-fire order at 0153, Captain DuBose could not believe it. He asked, "What's the dope? Did you want to cease fire? Authenticate that!" Callaghan answered, "Affirmative," ordered course changed to the north, and ordered all ships retake position in column astern. Captain DuBose complied with the order and followed the flagship in a turn to the northward. (с. 79)
Таким образом - Каллаган подтвердил командиру "Портленда" приказ, который (вроде бы) касался только "Сан-Франциско". И после прекращения огня Каллаган приказал повернуть на север, в сторону японцев.
Далее (по тексту - ранее):
While the San Francisco was hitting her original target, she was illuminated by a searchlight from her starboard quarter, probably from the Nagara. Immediately afterward, the battleship Hiei was sighted and Admiral Callaghan announced, "We want the big ones! Get the big ones first!" The San Francisco began to swing left to unmask Turret III and thus to bring her entire main battery to bear on the target. The Hiei was also turning to the left, and with the range closing to twenty-five hundred yards, the firing began. (с.73)
Что мы имеем в этом описании? Вроде бы не было паузы и "подкрадывания", зато намерения Каллагана в отношении японских линкоров предельно понятны. И далее:
Although the visibility was getting progressively worse, it was not too bad for Portland's gunners to zero in on the target of a lifetime. In response to a query about the Japanese battleships' bearing, Admiral Callaghan added, "Give her hell!" and Captain DuBose now had the chance to do so (c. 81).
Вот как-то так. Можно спорить по поводу желания "подкрасться", но главная идея - желание Каллагана сцепиться с японским линкором на пистолетной дистанции, сиречь "агрессивные наступательные действий" - сомнений не вызывает.
