U.S. Army Selects Honeywell-General Electric
Engine To Power Self-Propelled Artillery And Tanks
(Source : Honeywell ; issued Sept. 28, 2000)
PHOENIX---The U.S. Army has awarded a Honeywell-General Electric partnership a three-year, $196 million contract to develop, produce and test 24 LV100-5 gas turbine engines for the Crusader self-propelled artillery system and as a retrofit engine for a large number of M1 Abrams main battle tanks.
Revenues will be divided equally between Honeywell and G.E.
In a second phase of the program, the partnership expects to produce 3,400 engines--2,700 to be integrated onto the Abrams in a retrofit program beginning in 2004 and 720 for the Crusaders beginning in 2005.
The LV100, a state-of-the-art gas turbine, will provide continual and smooth power, rapid acceleration, quick starting even in cold climates, no visible exhaust and quiet running for the Army's ground units. It is also a lightweight engine, at 2,300 pounds, and only 51 inches in length, providing considerable space and weight savings. It can operate on all grades of jet fuel, diesel and gasoline and can be easily interchanged between the Crusader and Abrams vehicles.
"Honeywell is proud to continue its heritage of providing the U.S. Army with the most contemporary, state-of-the-art gas turbine technology to meet its objective of powering both the Crusader and Abrams vehicles with a lightweight, common powerpack that ultimately will reduce operational and support costs,'' said Tom Culligan, Vice President and General Manager, Honeywell Defense & Space. "The LV100 will also provide U.S. soldiers in the field with the finest powerpack in the world and will reduce the Army's logistics footprint at the same time.''
The M1 Abrams currently is powered by the AGT-1500 gas turbine manufactured by Honeywell.
During Operation Desert Storm, 2,000 Abrams tanks powered by the AGT-1500 covered 3,000 kilometers without a single engine failure. Some 9,000 Abrams tanks worldwide equipped with the AGT-1500 have accumulated more than 11 million operational hours and have driven more than 43 million kilometers.
The LV100-5 has 43% fewer parts than the AGT-1500, will reduce operations and support cost by a factor of three, and will increase Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) by a factor of four. The system will be fully supported in the field by a worldwide Honeywell-G.E. repair and overhaul network.
Honeywell's Aerospace business has sales of $10 billion and is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. It is a leading global provider of integrated avionics, engines, systems and service solutions for aircraft manufacturers, airlines, business and general aviation, military, space and airport operations.
Honeywell is a US$24-billion diversified technology and manufacturing leader, serving customers worldwide with aerospace products and services; control technologies for buildings, homes and industry; automotive products; power generation systems; specialty chemicals; fibers; plastics; and electronic and advanced materials.
