The Spanish King Felipe II declared the Prince outlawed in 1580, and he offered twenty five thousand golden crowns to his murderer. After a number of failed attempts, Balthasar Gerards tried his hand. He bought two pistols and shot the prince on the stairs near a dining room. Before the Father of Nation breathed his final breath he said in French: ’Dear God, dear God, have pity on me and this poor nation’.
