Bolshevist Aggression. While the Bolshevists have made no direct reply to the message addressed to them by the Paris Conference, they do not show the smallest disposition to suspend hostilities, which is the first conctition of an audience. On the con- trary, they have just compeUed the limited Allied forces based on Archangel to withdraw twenity miles nearer the \ lhite Sea. Their attack was apparently delivered at a single point east of the railway to Vologda, but as it was successful it may be presumed that the rest of the Allied posts have fallen back in conformity. It is said that the Bolshevists are now using gas shells, and it is quite evident that they are well armed. ?lhe news of this further retirement is disagreeable, but it may again be said that it gives no serious cause for anxiety, because Archangel is a sufficiently safe base. 'The Bolshevists themselves circulated yesterday by wireless a long account of their military successes at various points round the edge of the great expanse of territory whieh they domni- nate. No one would pay very much attention to a Bolshevist bulletin, but it is time we recognized that their military strength is increasing. As for the horrors they continue to perpetrate in the regions under their control, a few terrible glimpses are disclosed in the dispatch we publish to-day from our Special Correspondent at Omsk. The plight of the inhabitants in the big cities grows steadily worse, because they are being slowly starved to death.
Но в общем это похоже на отмазки для оправдания "отступления в полном порядке". Кстати, заметка от 31 января 1919 (8 полоса) об этих боях о химических снарядах не упоминает вообще, просто говорит о сильном артиллерийском обстреле
Week's Fighting At Archangel. The War fffice make the following announce- ment: Further cltails of the fighlting about Shen- kursk [abajt 180 miles south of Archangel] have now be?.n received. On the w(irning of January 19 a bombardment was openea by the Bolshevists on our positions south of lA,t-Padensk (on the River Vfaga, 15 miles soutb 4pf Shenkursk). An hour later an. infantry att":k was launched by a force esti- mated at abhlt 1,200 against our outpost lies, which withdlilvw to the msin position ; the sub- sequent attak on our nmain position was re- pulsed with at least 150 casualties to the enemy. On the same day the enemy, about 1,000 strong. 4ttacked our positions on the Tarnia river (18 iiiiles west of Shenkursk) and forced Cossack traqps holding this part of the front to withdraw .a*rut four miles down the river. In both these attacks the enemy had the advantage of a very tcorsiderable numerical superiority. Fightini. accompanied by beavy shelling, continued 6 the 20th, 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, and on the nigli 23rd-24tli our forces were success- fully withtciawn to prepared positions covering the town of Shenklrsk. In face of continued pressure, which threatZned to surraund Shenkursk, a successful withdrawil was carried out on January 25, only one gun a4-id some stores being abandoned. Five hundred rbf.ugees, together witlh all the sick and wounded in tho town, were successfully evacuated. We now hold a much shorter line to the north of Shenkursk. On the morning of January 25 another attack was carried out by the enemy against otir positions at Tarasevo (30 miles north-east of Plesetskaya, on the Archangel- Vologrb ziiilway, and about 100 miles from ArchanWe1), but this effort wvas a completc failure. During the whole week artillery activitv has been mai;ifested against all the Allied positions on the Archangel front. The operations were well orgasnized, and the efforts made to distract attention from the points of attack, by artillery bombardnsents on other parts of the front, show a marked improvement in the Bolshevist leadership, The Bolshevists have fought well, and their losses have undoubtedly been very heavy. The Allui!d forces engaged, who were for the most part American and Russian troops, were skilfully hnndled, and as a result suffered only slight casuilties
