А.В. Исаеву. На будущее. Потери ГА Центр под Москвой.
The German losses in this period are not particularly problematic. They are, f.e., treated in detail of colume 5/1 of DRZW (militärgeschichtliches Forschuingsamt's general history of Germany in WWII), on the basis of the Truppenkrankenachweisungen. There is ample data available also in more accessible documentary sources, such as the loss overviews that were compiled three times a month for the Wehrmachtsführungsstab, giving both thelatest figures and often corrected figures for previous periods. Additionally, there are the loss reports of the individual armies, submitted on a weekly or ten-day basis. What is more, all of these are essentially in accordance with each other, though the totals are usually slighthly adjusted upwards over time in the WFST reports. All in all, as regards combat losses, there is nothing that suggests any significant problems or delays in the reporting on the personnell side.
The following is an extract of an article I am currently working on on this subject, which I hope may be helpful.
In this case, the same total recurs in a large number of reports, including of as late as December 1941. DRZW 5/1 gives a figure of 113,762 losses without AOK Norwegen, which does imply a somewhat higher total figure as that command incurred 3,606 losses in October.
The armies reported the following losses in October:
TABLE X: LOSSES OF THE ARMEEOBERKOMMANDOS IN THE EAST 1-31 OCTOBER
HG N
AOK 16 16177

As is seen, these correspond very closely to later reported figures. Due to the strong likelihood of the preliminary strength figures being considerably on the low side, it is not possible to calculate losses as a percentage of end of month strength in a meaningful way for this month. It is however clear that since the losses are somewhat lower, we can expect an overall casualty intensiveness of a scope fairly similar to the preceding month.
As before, complete Luftwaffe figures for the East were gradually arrived at over time. For example, only 118 casualties were reported for the II Dekade of the month , while later reports adjusted the total for the whole month upwards to 2,537 and then 3,699.
Kriegsmarine losses in the East are given as 4,577 from the beginning of Barbarossa to the end of October, though this figure dates from early November and is probably not complete.
Non-combat losses in October are again only given as approximate by DRZW 5/1 – some 64,000. Hence, the total manpower loss to the ground forces amounted to ~178,000. 78,000 replacements arrived.
NOVEMBER
For November, we unfortunately have only the reported overall figures for the first two Dekaden:
TABLE X REPORTED LOSSES OF THE OSTHEER INCLUDING AOK NORWEGEN 1-20 NOVEMBER
Period KIA WIA MIA Total
I 4257 15205 782 20244
II 7477 26784 1362 35623
Total 11734 41989 2144 55867
However, there is no shortage of sources for the monthly total, which is 87,139 of whom 3,088 pertained to AOK Norwegen. DRZW 5/1 gives exactly the same figure (if we subtract the total for AOK Norwegen), with this breakdown:
16,945 KIA
64,116 WIA
2,990 MIA
= 84,051
The losses distributed thusly among the commands:

Initially reported Luftwaffe figures for the East were 109 for I Dekade, 124 for II Dekade and 597 for the month as a whole. This was subsequently adjusted to 2,150.
Non-combat losses were already starting to mount by November, when 73,092 were recorded. This yields a total of 157,143 departuires for the ground forces in the East without AOK Norwegen, against which 55,000 replacements arrived.
DECEMBER
These were the initially reported losses for the first two Dekaden:
TABLE X LOSSES OF THE OSTHEER AND AOK NORWEGEN 1-20 DECEMBER

I 4026 16713 1293 22032
II 4358 17096 1035 22489
Total 8384 33809 2328 44521
Totals for the month is given variously as 77,857 and 77,793. DRZW 5/1 states:
14,752 KIA
57,747 WIA
4,594 MIA
= 77,093
Since this is without AOK Norwegen, we need to add these losses for the month, which were 764. This brings the total to 77,857, which is identical to the former of the above figures.
The losses reported by the AOKs were these:

The Luftwaffe reported 49 casualties in the East during I dekade and 62 during the II Dekade , while their monthly total were later adjusted to 1149. This last figure is still relatively close in time, and may still be too low.
Under the extreme conditions prevalent during the first hard winter for which the forces up front found themselves so badly prepared, non-combat losses – to a large extent frostbites – rose to alarming levels. 90,907 such losses were recorded – a figure higher than the combat losses. Simultaneously, and somewhat contrary to widespread belief, as many as 99,000 replacements reached the forces in the East to offset this total loss of 168,000. Also, 225., 330. and 81. ID arrived in the East, which adds close to 50,000 men. When we factor in the assumed 20,000 men returning from the area of operations, total departures and arrivals for this month ought to more or less cancel out.
