This is an original photo of a member of the Seaplane / Hydroplane Unit based in Varna. The unit was under German commandment for a very short period of time between 1916 and 1917 and after that it was all Bulgarian. The Seaplane unit had a very limited staff. After the Germans, the unit was attached to the Varna strong Point commandment. Only about 8 or so sea airplanes were based in this seaplane base and the staff was really extremely small. Short history of the Seaplane air aviation / pilot unit:
01.02.1916 - Varna. A Seaplane / Hydroplane Station begins its activity.; 31.05.1917 - Varna. 1st Bulgarian combat mission of the Hydroplane / Seaplane Base (Station), attached to the Black Sea Marine Unit.; 13.09.1917 - Varna. Last combat mission of the Hydroplane Station of the Black Sea Marine Unit.
