Israeli Speaker did not help improve relations with Lithuania: MP
VILNIUS, Sept 26 (AFP) - The speaker of the Lithuanian parliament said on Friday that a visit by his Israeli counterpart earlier week had not helped improve relations between the two countries, and might even make them worse.
"If we try to evaluate this visit, it was not one which could contribute to the improvement of our relations and mutual understanding," Arturas Paulauskas said in an interview on Lithuanian public radio.
He said a speech by Israeli speaker Reuven Rivlin in the Vilnius parliament on Tuesday had been "balanced, moderate with reminders of the painful pages of our history."
However, he said a later statement at the Paneriai Holocaust memorial had been "full of accusations and grievances".
Vilnius was one of Europe's most important centers of Jewish culture before World War II, but about 95 percent of its 220,000-strong prewar Jewish community perished in the Holocaust.
During his speech at the Paneriai Holocaust memorial Rivlin said had said that "Lithuanian people still have much to reciprocate for" and that "German ocupation could not serve as a excuse".
Speaking before parliament he had also insisted that the Baltic country return to its rightful owners all Jewish property plundered during World War II.
Paulauskas said he did not understand why Rivlin had linked the two issues.
"It seems like that there are attempts to solve property matters though the blood of killed people. I believe issues of property, like any other matters of restitution, should be solved in keeping with Lithuanian laws," he said.
