Vietnamese soldiers and generals die in helicopter crash

TONY SKINNER JDW Special Correspondent

Sixteen Vietnamese soldiers, including two generals, were killed when their Russian-made Mil Mi-8 helicopter crashed on the island of Me, 10 km off the coast of Thanh Hoa province in central Vietman, the Vietnamese People's Army reported on 27 January.
A Military spokesman said the helicopter hit a military communications mast while flying in thick fog on the island, some 200km south of Hanoi.
"The helicopter immediately exploded after hitting the pylon" shortly after taking off on the afternoon of 26 January, the spokesman said. Vietnamese media reported the senior officers were inspecting "combat readiness in the region".
One of the generals, Lieutenant General Truong Dinh Thanh, was commander-in-chief of Military Zone No. 4. Among the dead officers were five colonels, three lieutenant colonels and two majors as well as a military journalist with the rank of captain and the three pilots.
All victims have been recovered and the defence ministry had opened a formal investigation into the cause of the crash.
A similar type of helicopter crashed in 2001 in the centre of the country, also killing 16.
Vietnam is currently believed to have up to 55 Mi-8 Mi-17 medium support helicopters operated by the 916th Helicopter Transport Regiment based at Hoa Lac Air Base.
