MAJOR DEFENCE AND DUAL-USE PROGRAMMES

4.6.2 Light Vehicles

Beginning in the 1950s, MHI developed the Jeep-like J54A and J25A Type 73 light vehicles for various JGSDF applications. These included reconnaissance and anti-tank versions mounted with heavy machine-guns, recoilless rifles and KAM-3D Type 64 and KAM-9 Type 79 anti-tank missiles, and a carrier for the Toshiba Tan Type 81 short-range surface-to-air missile. Toyota and Nissan have also developed various 4x4 light vehicle designs (e.g. Nissan Patrol and Toyota Land Cruiser) that have been exported widely and have dual-use applications. Toyota has recently developed a new high-mobility vehicle for the JGSDF.
