"Kleist now ordered his armoured forces to swing east again towards Rostov. The Leibstandarte was ordered to advance along the coast with Taganrog as its objective. By 11 October the Leibstandarte was outside Taganrog and had pushed a small bridgehead over the Mius River, which guarded the western approaches to the town. Three Waffen-SS battalions then stormed into the town on 17 October, and drove off a Soviet tank regiment that tried to intervene to help its defenders. The five-day battle for the town was very confused, with small groups of Waffen-SS men having to hold off huge Soviet attacks by infantry and tanks. When six men of the Leibstandarte's reconnaissance battalion were overrun and executed by Soviet troops, Dietrich was enraged and ordered every Russian prisoner captured over a four-day period to be shot. More than 4000 Russians were killed in cold blood by the Leibstandarte."
