The leading vessel of Type 051C air-defence DDG (115) was just launched in December 2004 at Dalian Shipyard. Its overall design looks like an enlarged Type 051B/Luhai DDG, which appears more conventional and less stealthy as Type 052B/C DDG. The ship is belived to be powered by boilers and has a full displacement around 7,000t. This might indicate the technological and budgetary constraints of Dalian Shipyard. Type 051C will likely feature the RIF-M/S-300F vertically launched SAM system ordered from Russia in 2002. The missile has a range of 120km. Its fire control radar is 30N6E phased array radar which can direct 12 48N6E missiles to engage 6 targets simultaneously. The exact location of the radar onboard the ship is still unknown. A total of 48 missiles are housed in 6 revolver launchers. 2 VLS launchers are thought to be installed at the B position and 4 ahead of the helicopter hanger (though there have been speculations that the structure is not a hanger at all). In addition to the RIF-M SAM system, two Type 730 CIWS are likely installed at midship. Currently it is unclear what type of SSM system 115 will carry, either YJ-83 or YJ-62. However a total of 8 SSMs are expected instead of 16 due to the limited space available between the forward funnel and rear mast. The main gun is thought to be single 100mm rapid-fire gun with a stealthy turret. The fire control radar could be Type 344 on top of the bridge, air search radar could be Top Plate on top of the main mast and surface search radar could be Type 364 on top of the rear mast. At least two Type 051C are expected to be constructed. 115 will greatly enhance the air-defense capability of PLAN North Sea Fleet. "
