Indonesian military insists on Sukhoi purchase
JAKARTA, July 2
Indonesian Armed Forces Commander General Endriartono Sutarto asserted Wednesday the planned purchase of Russia-made Sukhoi jet fighters must continue despite mounting criticism at home. "The Sukhoi purchase must go on," Sutarto was quoted by the official news agency Antara as saying at the military academy in the town of Magelang, Central Java province. He denied reports that the purchase was a sudden plan from a certain group, saying the purchase program has been planned for a long time but was delayed when the financial crisis hit the country. President Megawati Soekarnoputri during her visit to Russia in April reached an agreement with the host government on the purchase of two Sukhoi 27s, two Sukhoi 30s and two MI-35 helicopters under the 192 million US dollars counter trade scheme. The deal sparked outrage among legislators who questioned why the Indonesian industry and trade ministry played a key role instead of the defense ministry. They said the deal has not been consulted first with the House of Representatives, pledging not to approve the use of the state budget to finance the purchase. A House commission has reportedly established a special committee to investigate the so-called Sukhoi-gate. Meanwhile, Air Force Chief of Staff Marshal Chappy Hakim said in an interview with Jakarta-based Tempo magazine "it isn't possible for the president to decide on buying a Sukhoi one day and have the transaction done immediately." He said the air force has made contact with Russia since 1995. When asked why Sukhoi fighters were chosen, he said "we chose the Sukhoi because of its superiority...endurance and better maneuverability, longer machine wear and tear and other advantages. "

военные тоже недовольны. Контракт пошел через Министерство торговли, а там на 165 млн бартера. Обидно, да, такое бабло пиджаки пилят. Собственно, одна из линий критики - почему сделка подписана не военными.
