In October 1944 … the Joint Chiefs of Staff eveluated the proposals and directed MacArthur to land on Luzon on 20 December 1944, and Nimitz to assault Iwo Jima on 20 January 1945 and Okinawa on 1 March. This last operation before the November invasion of Japan was codenamed Iceberg. The Ryuku Islands group was codenamed Bunkhouse and Okinawa itself was designated Scattering.
