The British noted that 64 per cent of the prisoners were Turks, 27 per cent were Arabs, and 9 per cent were Greeks, Armenians, and Jews. Comparable statistics contained in Hüseyin Hüsnü Emir’s 9 September 1917 report on the ethnic composition of infantry divisions were 66 per cent Turkish, 26 per cent Arab, and 8 per cent of the other races. It appears that the British captured enemy soldiers in numbers almost directly reflecting the ethnic composition of the Ottoman Army.
