(Naval Action of Guadalcanal. Night Action 13 November 1942):

The senior officers began making their damage reports to Captain Nishida. Commander Takeya's gunnery department had been hit fairly hard: main battery control had been hit twice and destroyed. All four turrets had been hit: Numbers I and IV had been hit on their barbettes, but no damage was done, for the armor was nine inches thick. Numbers II and m had been hit twice, each on its six-inch-thick roof, and Turret III had had some rivets loosened. The guns themselves were untouched and fully operable. The six-inch battery had been hurt worse: the control station had been hit twice and the officer in charge had been killed; there was no electrical power to the directors; guns 6, 7, and 8 had all been hit; and there was a fierce ammunition fire amidships. Five-inch antiaircraft mounts 1,2 and 3 were all hit, as were the handling rooms for mounts 1 and 3. Again, the result was major fires. Many of the twenty-five-millimeter guns and their crews were casualties as well.
Six hits along the waterline (probably eight-inch) caused flooding in various parts of the hull and a list to starboard. With several pumping stations hit, it was difficult to correct the list. The superstructure was burned out as a result of at least two dozen hits, and all radio communications were lost. A hit on the forecastle started a fire in a battle dressing station there, and at least eight more fires burned in other parts of the ship. Altogether the ship had been hit about 102 times, of which perhaps one-third were duds.
The Hiei was in rough shape, but was in no danger of sinking. She had fulfilled her role as a battleship, dealing out fearful damage to the enemy, and she could do more if the fight was renewed.
