No large British warship had visited the Far East since long before the war, but with the Battle of Britain safely weathered in 1940, the Bismarck sunk in May 1941, and the new King George V Class battleships coming into service, the Admiralty decided upon a longterm plan to assemble a force of heavy warships in the Indian Ocean; then to send it to Singapore as Britain’s third fleet – the ‘Eastern Fleet’. Public Record Office documents reveal that this fleet was to consist of no less than seven battleships or battle cruisers, one aircraft carrier, ten cruisers and twenty-four destroyers. Together with the American Pacific fleet based at Pearl Harbor, this force would be a formidable deterrent to Japanese aggression.
But there were several weaknesses in the Admiralty plan. The battleships selected were Nelson and Rodney with the four old and slow R Class ships, Ramillies, Resolution, Revenge and Royal Sovereign, and the equally old but faster battle cruiser Renown. No King George V Class ship was included; quantity rather than quality would be the keynote. Then, it was found necessary to refit or repair many of the ships chosen, and also to fit them with the latest radar. And finally, the destroyers could not yet be released from the Home and Mediterranean Fleets or from convoy work. The earliest date given by the Admiralty for the assembly of the Eastern Fleet was March 1942. This document is undated, but undoubtedly refers to the Admiralty policy for the summer of 1941 after the Bismarck had been sunk
И в общем-то британцы, с известными оговорками, привели этот план в исполнение - только линкоров было чуть меньше (к марту 1942 г. в состав Восточного флота успели подогнать 5 линкоров и 1 линейный крейсер), авианосцев чуть больше. И это - несмотря на потерю Арк Рояла и временное исключение всех линкоров и авианосцев из состава Средиземноморского флота.
