Hell'o

----------------------------------------
Dearest Mr. POPENKER,

Here is *** from Italy. I have an unusual request to make
you, and I wonder if you are the one who might satisfy it.

I have recently started to work as a contributor for an Italian gun
magazine, DIANA ARMI. I have been dispatched by my Editor-In-Chief, Mr.
FRANCO PALAMARO, to write a series of articles about a series of persons
who have entered in history bounding their names to a particular
firearm, or to their extraordinary skill in use of firearms. I have
written two articles about two American "celebrities" in the field, USMC
Gy.Sgt. Carlos Hathcock (Marine Scout Sniper in Vietnam, 1966/1968), and
US Army Mj.Gen. George S. Patton (Army leader, World War 2). My next
article is bound to be about VASSILI ZAITSEV, the famous Soviet marksman
who stood during the Stalingrad siege.

I have to write at least 6000 spaces of biography and curiosity (plus a
significative paragraph about his rifle); and I was wondering if you
could be the source of any news. Furthermore, I would be in significant
needs of high-resolution pictures of either Mr. Zaitsev (if any, a
handful would be enough), the city of Stalingrad during the war, and his
rifle (or any "compliant"), which I understand to have been a
Mosin-Nagant equipped with a telescopic sight.

I would greatly appreciate any help you could provide; I am aware that
there are at least 3 books featuring extensive news about Mr. Zaitsev
(one being an auto-biography), but them have never been published in
Italy, and ordering them from abroad would make them arrive too late for
the (very little!!!) time that I have to write the article.
Rest assured that you will be extensively quoted as the source for
anything you will be able to provide, and I will provide you a scan of
the article with a translation in English should you need it.

I will be looking forward to hear back from you. I thank you
anticipately for any help that you may be able and will be willing to
provide, and in the meanwhile please let me pose you my sincerest regards.
