А вот что в книге Граф-Гриславски...
со слов того же деда записано
Aithough the Soviets brought forward an increasing number of modern aircraft... it was apparent that their staff of airmen suffered from shortened training. Over and over again, Soviet pilots acted more or less helpless in combat situations; it was evident that most of them were not completely familiar with their new aircraft, and they often displayed terribly low flying skills.
In addition, the lack of radio transmitters in Soviet fighter planes enabled German aces to knock down several planes in a row, the last of the shot down pilots being just as surprised as the first one.
What further benefited the German fighters free hunt tactic was the way the Soviet dispatched their aircraft. Almost without exeption, the Soviet aircraft operated in small formations rarely dispatching more than a dozen aircraft at a time...
...
There was a huge difference in pilot quality on the Soviet side. Most of their pilots flew as beginners, definitely prematurely graduated from flight training schools, while a few proved to be really skillful and dangerous opponents.
