CHAPTER 4 - MAJOR DEFENCE AND DUAL-USE PROGRAMMES

MAJOR DEFENCE AND DUAL-USE PROGRAMMES

4.6.2 Light Vehicles

Beginning in the 1950s, MHI developed the Jeep-like J54A and J25A Type 73 light vehicles for various JGSDF applications. These included reconnaissance and anti-tank versions mounted with heavy machine-guns, recoilless rifles and KAM-3D Type 64 and KAM-9 Type 79 anti-tank missiles, and a carrier for the Toshiba Tan Type 81 short-range surface-to-air missile. Toyota and Nissan have also developed various 4x4 light vehicle designs (e.g. Nissan Patrol and Toyota Land Cruiser) that have been exported widely and have dual-use applications. Toyota has recently developed a new high-mobility vehicle for the JGSDF.

TITLE : Mitsubishi (4 x 4) light vehicles

TEXT :
Description
In 1953, Mitsubishi obtained a licence from the American Willys (later
Kaiser Jeep) company to manufacture the Jeep in Japan for both civilian
and military use. The first model was the CJ3B-JB and was followed by many
other models, all available with petrol or diesel engine, left- or right-
hand drive, long or short wheelbase and with an open or enclosed
passenger/cargo area.
For many years the standard {1/4} tonne vehicle of the Japanese Self-
Defence Force was the Mitsubishi J54A. Powered by a four-cylinder petrol
engine, it developed 75 hp at 3,800 rpm, was coupled to a manual gearbox
with three forward and one reverse gears and had a two-speed transfer
case. Basic details of the J54A are: 3.33 m length, 1.595 m width, 1.85 m
height, 2.03 m wheelbase, 92 km/h maximum road speed and 6.00 x 16 tyres.
Variants in service included an ambulance, anti-tank armed with a 106 mm
Type 60 recoilless rifle and anti-tank armed with two KAM-3D (Type 64)
wire-guided anti-tank missiles.
The J54A was replaced by the J24A, designated the Type 73 by the
Japanese Ground Self-Defence Force (Army).
