URO VAMTAC (4 × 4) 1,500 kg high-mobility tactical vehicle
Development
The URO VAMTAC (4 × 4) 1,500 kg tactical vehicle was first shown publicly in mid-1998. It bears a visual resemblance to the US HMMWV, due to being designed to a similar specification and to meet a corresponding requirement from the Spanish armed forces for a multipurpose, air-portable, high mobility off-road vehicle with a viable payload capacity. The VAMTAC underwent extensive testing by the Spanish Ministry of Defence and orders to date have totaled around 500 vehicles for the Spanish armed forces, plus 50 vehicles for the Dominican Republic.
Description
The VAMTAC (Vehiculo de Alta Movilidad Tactico) is available configured in three main forms, command/control, chassis-cab, and pick-up. Of these the chassis-cab and pick-up variants are available with one of three cab options: two-door; four-door; or a reduced size four-door version with smaller rear doors and consequently less cab space. The command/control variant is available only with four full size doors and has a 1.885 m cargo area that can covered with either a soft or slightly sloping hardtop.
The chassis-cab versions have 2.11, 1.178 and 1.575 m of chassis space, respectively, between the cab rear wall and the rear chassis crossmember. This can be used to mount a wide variety of shelter-type or cargo bodies. The pick-up versions retain to lower rear body panels of the command/control variant, and on the two-person, two-door model, retain the lower half of the original rear doors.
The pick-up versions have 2.185, 1.285 and 1.625 m of available space respectively, for the addition of any hardtop or the mounting of any shelter-type structure or armament. Armament options can include machine guns, grenade launchers, TOW ATGW, a 81 mm mortar, a 106 mm M40 series recoilless rifle and light air defence missiles such as the Mistral system. The VAMTAC has been tested towing the BAE Systems, RO Defence 105 mm Light Gun (the Spanish armed forces have 56 105/37 Light Guns). Open top models are also available and these can be fitted with rollover protection if required. Low profile variants with foldable front windscreens are also available.
A snowplough or light dozer blade can be installed on the front of the vehicle and it can mount a light crane.
Dependant on configuration the VAMTAC can transport up to 12 people (11 + driver), or 1,500 kg of payload off-road, 2,000 kg with the optional uprated suspension. The steel body can be easily removed from the chassis, and dependant on configuration is fixed at four or eight points. If required various levels of supplementary armour offering up to 7.62 mm AP may be added. A lightweight version with an aluminium body and soft-top and doors has been demonstrated.
The torsionally rigid chassis consists of two square section rails joined by what are termed as `special structures'. The fully independent suspension set-up consists of coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers at each wheel station. The front axle is fitted with an anti-roll bar, this is optional for the rear. Double reduction portal axles (differential and hub) are fitted and four-wheel drive is permanent. Driver controlled differential locks are available for the transfer box and each axle giving full four-wheel lock-up when required. Some of the axle and suspension componantry is interchangeable, front and rear. Ventilated dual circuit disc brakes are fitted all-round, supplemented by an optional engine exhaust brake.
There are two engine options available for the VAMTAC. The original six-cylinder Steyr unit being supplemented by a four-cylinder IVECO unit in 1999. Those vehicles fitted with the Steyr unit are designated VAM T5, those with the IVECO unit as VAM T3. Approximately 60 per cent of vehicles supplied to the Spanish armed forces are of T5 designation and fitted with the more powerful Steyr option consisting of the M16-TCA turbocharged and intercooled 190 hp diesel engine coupled to an Allison four-speed automatic gearbox and Allison TC-275 torque converter. A five-speed automatic gearbox is an option with this engine. These T5 vehicles are assigned what are termed tactical roles, the remaining (approx.) 40 per cent of T3 vehicles fitted the IVECO option are assigned logistic roles. The IVECO option consists of an IVECO turbocharged and intercooled 140 hp diesel coupled to an IVECO five-speed manual gearbox. An automatic transmission is an option with this engine.
Fuel consumption with the 140 hp IVECO unit and manual gearbox improves from 15 litres/hr at 90 km/h with the Steyr/Allison combination, to 10 litres/hr at 90 km/h. Maximum speed also reduces by 20 km/h to 110 km/h.
Optional equipment for the VAMTAC includes an electrical 5,400 kg straight-pull winch, low-profile run-flat tyres, a central tyre inflation (CTI) system, deep fording kit (up to 1.5 m), pneumatic trailer brake, sump and suspension guards, protection bars for the radiator grille, swing-out spare tyre carrier and/or jerrycan rack, and air conditioning.
The VAMTAC can be slung under a CH-47 Chinook helicopter or carried internally in a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. It can be parachute-delivered from low altitude.
