Может просто в духе традиции сделать
gunner - канонир
carpenter - плотник
и не грузить читателя чем-то, чего нет, условно, в советском капитане Бладе.
Если взять например Втрубдуева (он на английском в public domain)
то у него некто Хоббс как и/о канонира (acting gunner) проходит.
В русском переводе его обозвали артиллеристом, что не очень.

Если полезть в книжки конца XVIII века, то там только
Muster Gunner of England. В корабельном контексте master отдельно, gunner отдельно
Master gunner это какой-то береговой деятель из крепости в XIX веке получается
А раньше да был старший канонир
