The fire could not be controlled and the ship was sunk by friendly gunfire. Some 150 patients on board could not be taken off and were lost with the ship. The Ramb IV was 3,676 tons and launched in 1937. The ship was operated on behalf of the Ministry of War Transport by the English Coaling Company after its capture." (с)

возможно наиболее реальным вариантом развития событий был то, который дал sas. Торпеда, слишком дорогой и ценный для Египта способ. Их там не в изобилии было.

There were six hundred wounded soldiers aboard the mercy ship when she left Tobruk. Originally an Italian hospital ship, the “Ramb IV” was detained in 1941 for use by British and enemy wound. Photo was made by one of the survivors.
