Vijayanta tanks to be decommissioned
(Defence India, 22 May 2001)

Finally, the Indian Army has decided to say good bye to its Vijayanta tanks
after a long association of 35 years. The Vijayanta tanks would be replaced
with the more modern Russian T-90S tanks. The decision was taken after the
conclusion of operation Poorna Vijay in western sector on May 12. According
to defence sources, the process of replacing the tanks has already been
started and it would be completed in a phased manner in the next seven
years.

The Army has 2141 such old tanks, which were inducted during the 1965
Indo-Pak war. The sources said that these tanks have already served their
marked age of 30 to 35 years. There was no relevance of these old tanks in
battle field as the battle scenario has undergone changes, sources said. The
Vijayanta tanks had displayed their efficacy and capabilities during the
wars with Pakistan. The tanks had shown their assault power in western and
northern sector.
