Бомба была создана в первую очередь для расчистки минных полей и поражения наземных сил противника. Во Вьетнаме BLU-82 также использовали для расчистки вертолетных площадок.

Бомба падает 'носом' вниз на взрывной штырь длиной 1,24м, что позволяет направить меньше энергии на образование кратера. БЧ состоит из 5,715 кг взрывчатки тима GSX (нитар аммония, аллюминиевый порошок, полистереновое 'мыло'). Подрыв БЧ создает максимальное давление в 72 кг/см^2 и может расчистить минное поле диаметром до 3 миль (радиус ~1.5км).

Именно расчистить минное поле а повалить лес на такой площади. Во Вьетнаме эта бомба могла очистить площадку для 2-3 вертолетов. Не так много.

Development
The BLU-82 bomb, nicknamed `Big Blue 2' or `Daisy Cutter', was developed to provide the USAF with a high-blast bomb for creating corridors through large minefields, but also for use against ground forces. This bomb was also used to clear helicopter landing areas in the jungle. The bomb was designed to be delivered by pushing it out of the rear cargo doors of the USAF's MC-130H Combat Talon (Hercules) aircraft. In order that the bomb's explosive energy should not be dissipated in a crater, a 1.24 m standoff probe was designed which had an M904 nose fuze in its front end. The bomb was first used in the mine-clearing role by the USAF in 1991, to open the Desert Storm ground war. At this time the bomb is only cleared for carriage by USAF's MC-130H Combat Talon aircraft.

Description
The BLU-82 is a high-blast bomb which is internally carried by the USAF MC-130H Combat Talon Aircraft. It is an extremely dumpy bomb, looking like a large can with a conical nose, to which is fixed a standoff impact fuze probe made from steel pipe. The bomb has no stabilising fins but at the rear end it has a large stabilising parachute pack. Fixed to the outside of the bomb main casing are several attachment points by which the bomb is fixed to a sliding cargo pallet. The BLU-82 overall length is 5.37 m, of which 1.24 m is the standoff fuze probe. It has a body diameter of 1.56 m, and, with a filling of 5,715 kg (12,600 lb) of high explosive, weighs 6,800 kg. The filling is GSX, a jellied slurry blast explosive (DBA-22M ammonium nitrate, aluminium powder and polystyrene soap), which when detonated creates an overpressure of 73 kg/cm2 (1,000 lb/sq in). The nose fuze is the conventional M904 air-driven nose fuze used in the Mk 80 series and M117 general purpose bombs. The bomb is simply delivered by pushing it out of the rear cargo doors of the aircraft on a large pallet using the well-established stores delivery technique. Once clear of the aircraft the pallet falls clear and the bomb's descent is stabilised and slowed by a parachute system.
During the 1991 Gulf War the bombs were normally released in pairs from about 5,200 m (17,000 ft) altitude. The bombs achieved a circular error average of 32 m and given the BLU-82's large HE payload, this was considered equivalent to a direct hit. The BLU-82 is credited with being able to clear a 3 mile path through a minefield.

Operational status
The BLU-82 is in service with the USAF. During the 1991 Gulf War 11 `Daisy Cutter' bombs were dropped on Iraqi minefields and anti-aircraft networks.

Мое почтение!

Официальное название бомбы BLU-82B (Big Blue 2). Это новая, более мощная модель "Big Blue" ('Daisy Cutter') применявшаяся во Вьетнаме. Внешне бомбы практически идентичны.

Оксиликвит.
Битва за Москву могла снаряжаться целлюлозой и жидким кислородом. Рвалась солидно в общем то но трудна в обслуживании (жидкий кислород).

Нет, там другое имелось в виду. Бомба с корпусом из фанеры и обычной взрывчаткой. Чтобы на внешней подвеске "Стелса" его не демаскировала. Для радаров в смысле...
