Dearest Ones:
Recovering from a surgical (back) operation, I awoke this morning at 10
a.m. to discover that during the last hour of my sleep the Twin Towers of
the World Trade buildings in New York City had been blown into rubble by two
airplanes deliberately flying into them. The Pentagon was hit likewise about
the same time. It is thought that the plane that crashed Southeast of
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania had been headed for Camp David and somehow been
diverted. Perhaps the airline pilot was able to manouevre his plane not to
hit a key point.
Tom had been attending a seminar but came home early. Even here in Dallas
the building he was in was evacuated along with all the other tall buildings
across this country. The FAA ordered all airports closed and all planes to
land immediately. No air traffic is allowed, including news helicopters,
only military aircraft are aloft from coast to coast. I am sure you are as
yet unaware of this act of terrorism against America as in Australia it is
already the wee hours of Wednesday September 12 in the Southern Hemisphere.
We are aghast.
I haven't been able to send Brad's and Helen's wedding present yet, I guess
it won't get there before their wedding day now. These small personal
inconveniences are unimportant I know... many people are in strange cities,
grounded, unable to get home.
Rental cars were rushed -- people got off planes and naturally tried to to
get a car and drive to their destinations. Greyhound buses are not running
either. Don't know about cross-country trains but New York subways are
halted. Imagine, this massive city of the strongest nation on earth crippled
and nobody knowing who the enemy is. President Bush is on the move -- I
believe we are being fed DISinformation as to his whereabouts and that of
the Vice-President, Dick Chaney.
Arabs are suspected but if the authorities know who it is they are not
making it public at this time. It's weird being under attack and not knowing
who did it. Bin Laden, the Saudi terrorist, is suspected. So are Iraq, Iran,
and all the whole Middle East I guess. My own feeling is that it's probably
not a government entity but a private terrorist group. Very frightening what
a small group can accomplish. I keep thinking of the poor innocent
passengers on those planes that were used as guided missiles of destruction.
They were a United aircraft and three American Airliners carrying a total of
about 266 passengers and crew. Fires are still burning in the gigantic
amount of rubble resulting from the two 110-storey buildings that were once
the World Trade Center, so rescue workers cannot even get close enough to
search. I guess you'll see it all on the news. I believe nothing will be the
same after this day -- September 11, 2001. The money markets, security,
everything. Even Canadian borders are closed.
My thoughts are with you all right now. I am trying to persuade Tom that
perhaps now is the time to get Home to Australia and stay near our family.
Except for dear friends, we no longer have ties here in the US.
Much love,
XXXXXX
