The Pentagon on Tuesday halted the movement of the aircraft carrier Enterprise through the Indian Ocean toward home and ordered the big warship to await orders for a possible return to the Gulf to join another U.S. carrier, a senior Pentagon official said.
The Enterprise, which was recently replaced by the carrier Carl Vinson in the Gulf on patrol south of Iraq, was stopped in the Indian Ocean after a series of deadly and coordinated terrorist attacks hit the United States early on Tuesday.
"We have stopped the Enterprise and she is standing by," the official, who asked not to be identified, told Reuters.
The two aircraft carriers carry more than 60 warplanes each and could launch massive attacks of retribution if a country or terrorist group was proved to be behind the U.S. attacks. Normally, the U.S. Navy keeps only one carrier in the Gulf as a base for warplanes policing "no-fly" zones over southern Iraq.
Cruisers, submarines and other warships that escort the carriers are also capable of firing long-range cruise missiles with pinpoint accuracy.
U.S. officials refused to comment on whether there was any indication of who was responsible for the attacks, but Army Gen. Henry Shelton, chairman of the Pentagon Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a news conference that the armed forces were ready.
