Riot trucks for Mugabe
Jay BUSHINSKI

JERUSALEM: Despot Robert Mugabe is on the verge of signing a multi-milloon dollar deal for riot-control trucks that have the ability to fire low-grade chemical weapons.

The israeli Beit Alfa Trailer Company (BAT) is in talks with the Zembabwean Government, but has refused to confirm reports that as many as 30 trucks, at a cost of $20 million, will be sold.

The news came a week after Zimbabwe was exposed for human rights violations and on the day southern Africa’s leading banker warned the nation’s economy was on the break of collapse.

Dr Alon Lei decided to speak out after hearing how Mugabe has encouraged militants to drive white farmers from their land and has orchestrated a terror campaign against political opponents.

Writing in Jerusalem’s Ha’aretz newspaper, Dr Lei expressed revulsion that equipment produced by BAT – a company founded by a kibbutz commune – would be used “to pursue the courageous proponents of democracy or the farmers trying to continue working their land”.

It is believed the trucks could fire pepper spray or more noxious chemicals.

BAT, which specialises in water-cannon technology, has defended the sale, insisting the equipment would save lives.

BAT general manager Reuven Canfi confirmed chemicals “can be injected in the water stream” of the water cannons, but said buyers were encouraged to use “food colouring” instead for “psychological effect”.

Mr Canfi refused to comment on reports from Harare that 30 vehicles have been ordered.

A member of Israel’s Meretz Party, Nomi Chazan, said: “I think this is outrageous and I don’t think it helps Israel-Zimbabwe relations”.

The news of the multi-million deal has stunned commentators in Zimbabwe, particularly as it came as South Africa’s Reserve Bank Governor Titi Mboweni delivered the most damning comment yet by a senior South African official on events in Zimbabwe.

“The wheels have come off there”, he said of the country’s troubled neighbour.

Zimbabwe has been in crisis since February last year.

Mugabe has insisted it is immoral for 4500 whites to own the bulk of Zimbabwe’s prime land, but critics point out he has had 20 years to address the issue and is only doing so now as he faces an election next year.

ZIMBABWE: Police buy $1b riot gear
By Basildon Peta, Special Projects Editor, Financial Gazette, Zimbabwe
3/8/2001
The Ministry of Home Affairs this week sought authority from Treasury to make a down payment of $105 million to an Israeli company recently contracted to supply nearly $1 billion worth of special vehicles and water cannons that can be used in riots by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) ahead of crunch presidential elections next year.

HARARE - Official documents show that acting Home Affairs permanent secretary Mike Matshiya last Thursday wrote to Ellie Antebi of Israel’s arms manufacturer Beit Alfa Trailer Company (BAT) assuring the firm that Treasury had agreed to give high priority to mobilising foreign currency for the purchase of the equipment.

The equipment being bought is part of a wider government strategy to ensure that the ZRP is adequately equipped to deal with any possible riots ahead of a crucial election which President Robert Mugabe is seen losing.

Matshiya said in his correspondence to Antebi that the $105 million represented a 12.5 percent down payment of the total contract price of about $840 million.

The money would be used to buy at least 30 specially-made vehicles that are equipped with riot equipment similar to that widely used by Israeli security forces in quelling running battles with Palestinian protesters, as well as water cannons.
