The U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way, said the helicopter went down between Baghdad and Fallujah and that the crash appeared to have been related to mechanical problems.

Добрый день!
Короче, американцы говорят что это механические проблемы, а вот иракский офицер считает, что вертолет сбит ПЗРК "группой связанной с Аль-Каидой".

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A Sea Knight helicopter crashed Wednesday in an insurgent stronghold northwest of Baghdad, killing all seven people on board, the military said, the fifth chopper lost in Iraq in just over two weeks.

A senior U.S. defense official said the helicopter did not appear to have been hit by hostile fire, but an Iraqi air force officer said it was downed by an anti-aircraft missile and an al-Qaida-linked Sunni group claimed responsibility for the downing.

The twin-rotor CH-46 went down about 20 miles northwest of the capital, said U.S. military spokesman Maj. Gen. William Caldwell. "A quick reaction force is on site and the investigation is going on as we speak," he told reporters in Baghdad.

The military said later that the Marine CH-46 helicopter went down in the volatile Anbar province while conducting routine operations and all seven crew members and passengers were killed in the crash.

U.S. forces sealed off the area and helicopters buzzed overhead as flames and a huge plume of black smoke billowed from the wreckage in an open field, not far from a squat concrete farmhouse.

(офицер "иракских ВВС" - есть оказывается, такое)

Caldwell wouldn't comment on the possibility enemy fire might have brought the aircraft down, but an Iraqi air force officer told the Associated Press it was shot down by an anti-aircraft missile. An al-Qaeda-linked Sunni group has already claimed responsibility.

Как было в каком-то труде о люфтваффе, написанном немцами - "большинство Ме-262 погибло от попадания птиц и жуков в турбины"
И ехидная сноска от американского переводчика и/или редактора "большинство жуков видимо было калибра 0.5 дюйма"

но все таки, машинки-то старенькие. Может просто увидели пуск и попробовали уйти. А машина не выдержала и оппаньки.

Может быть. Но с другой стороны, отказавший двигатель - вполне себе mechanical problem. А то что причиной проблемы был "жук" калибра 12,7 или осколок ракеты ПЗРК - это ведь такие мелочи, не так ли? ;)

и стало ясно, что в любом случае, даже если они убились при попытке выполнить маневр ухода, то это будет combat loss. Хотя они и очень этого не любят.
