NORINCO 120 mm T-54/Type 59 Upgrade
The China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) has developed an upgrade package for the widely deployed Chinese Type 59 and Russian T-54/T-55 MBT (main battle tank) that includes the replacement of the 100 mm rifled cannon by a 120 mm smoothbore gun. As of early 1998 there are no known orders for the NORINCO 120 mm T-54/Type 59 MBT upgrade.
When further possibility for the modernization of bieter NORINCO (North Industries corporation) on also rubber-coated a re-tooling package, which contained substitution of the old 520-PS-Motors by a 730-PS-Maschine, as chains, ABC protective system, impact receiver, if necessary a Stabilisationssystem for the cannon and a new fire control system.
The company NORINCO developed also a package, which can be applied at the same time to its type 59 as well as the Russian T-54. Here the old cannon is replaced by a 120-mm-Kanone, whose origin does not admit exactly is. It has an automatic loading installation, which makes it possible to away-rationalize the load contactors and to reduce so the crew on 3 men. The warhead for this 120-mm-Kanone weighs 4.1 kg during the flight and achieves muzzle velocities of up to 1650 m/s. Therefore one after-says to the projectile, it possesses a striking power, which is just as large as the NATO ammunition. Entirely 28 pieces of ammunition in the tank can be shipped. A simplified fire control system was inserted together with a laser rangefinder. Enables to the rigged tank to attack moved targets if it is. This version is to need 7 seconds, in order to attack a fixed target, and ten for a moved target.
While the cannon is normally served by the gunner, the commander, if he considers it necessary, can take over the cannon at its workstation. Different types of night-vision devices can be inserted.
Altogether approx. 9300 NORINCO-Type-59-Kampfpanzer were built, however this number is not exact
