In 1940 Close took part in the defence of Calais, where he avoided being captured and was mentioned in dispatches. Later in the year 3 RTR were in North Africa, but in 1941 they were withdrawn to take part in the counter-productive intervention in Greece, where they faced very superior forces; most of them were captured and they lost all their tanks.
