The myth that Eben-Emael was captured by paratroops, a myth started by German propaganda, is still very much alive today. The combat engineers landed by glider on top of the fort and blinded the observation cupola that served the guns that covered the bridge used by the bulk of the German forces that eventually took the fort. However, the actual work of reducing each Belgian strongpoint was carried out by a battalion of assault engineers (Pionier Bataillon 51) and a battalion of ordinary infantry (II./Infanterie Regiment 151).
