In total, counting initial Red Army ground forces on 22 June and those mobilized to 31 December, during the first six months of war the Red Army fielded appoximately 483 rifle divisions, 73 tank divisions, 31 mechanized divisions and 101 cavalry divisions, for a total of 688 divisions. If brigades are tallied in the total on the basis of 2 brigades (rifle and tank) per division, another 133 divisions can be added, for a grand total of 821 divisional-size formations. Of this number, 447 divisions were in the field by 1 August.
