At the beginning of the war there were 26 cavalry regiments in the Romanian Army: 12 "rosiori" regiments, 13 calarasi and one guard regiment. The names were a 19th century tradition. The rosiori were the regular cavalry, the elite of the Romanian Army (the name came from the colour of their uniform: red). The calarasi were the territorial cavalry. After WWI the difference disappeared.
