NORINCO fast attack vehicle
Description
The China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) fast attack vehicle was first announced in mid-2001. The vehicle has been fielded by airborne units of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and despite disclosing the type being available for export sales, very little specific information has become available.
The NORINCO fast attack vehicle appears to be of rear-wheel drive 4 × 2 configuration with a rear-mounted engine and, in a central roll-over protected cage, seating for either four people, including the driver, or two people plus additional stores. The forward part of the vehicle carries a replacement wheel and on/off-road tyre, and a front-mounted electric winch is provided for self-recovery operations.
The vehicle is 4 m long, 2.095 m wide and 2.21 m high, and combat weight is given as 1,950 kg. No further dimensional or driveline details have been released.
A wide range of weapon stations can be fitted and the example shown in released photographs is armed with a 7.62 mm machine gun on a swivel mount to the right of the driver's position and a new Chinese 23 mm cannon installed in a circular mount on top of the roll-over protection system. The 23 mm cannon is fitted with a muzzle brake to reduce recoil forces so allowing it to be installed on light vehicles. The weapon can be traversed through a full 360º with elevation from -10º to +52º and the operator can fire single shots or automatic fire at the rate of 200 rpm or 400 rpm. The weapon is driven from a 24 V power source. Maximum effective range is 2,000 m. A total of 200 rounds of ready-to-use 23 mm ammunition is carried and, for increased accuracy, a day/night sighting system is installed above the weapon.
Status
Available for export. In service with the People's Liberation Army (PLA).
