MOSCOW (MT) -- Washington is "very close" to designating two or three Chechen militant groups as international terrorist organizations in response to a request submitted by Russia late last year, a senior U.S. diplomat said.
The diplomat said Friday that he did not know which groups would be included in the U.S. State Department list, but the decision was based on "the evolving body of evidence that these groups are drawing support from international terrorist networks and certainly have been involved in activities that meet the definition of terrorism."
He added that the process has been drawn out and more complicated than originally expected because of the strict legal standards involved.
Meanwhile, the Prosecutor General's Office is pursuing its effort to have 15 militant groups -- based both in Russia and abroad -- designated as terrorist organizations, which would give the state the authority to break them up and confiscate their property. The Supreme Court is to consider the list, compiled by the Federal Security Service, on Friday, Interfax reported.
