NASA: GREATER HEATING THAN THOUGHT ON COLUMBIA

NASA officials revealed on Monday afternoon that the latest data analysis showed that the temperature rose more than previously thought in the left wheel well of the doomed shuttle Columbia.
But space shuttle program manager Ron Dittemore cautioned that even though the temperature increase was greater than previously thought, that did not indicate a breach in the shuttle's structure.
He pointed out that the outside wing temperature at that point of the descent was 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit and the increase in temperature in the area giving the unusual readings increased 30-40 degrees in 5 minutes.

A former NASA engineer said the landing gear door, which protects vital wiring and sensors and could have been struck by the debris, is perhaps the most vulnerable part of the shuttle.
