Poland could trade boxships for F-16s
03.01.2003

US defence giant Lockheed Martin says it could broker deals to build six containerships at Stocznia Szcezcinska Nowa (SSN) under an offset deal for combat aircraft.

Polish defence minister Jerzy Szmajdzinski announced this week that Lockheed Martin would supply the country with 48 F-16 multi-task fighter aircraft worth between $3.5 bn and $3.8bn.

In return, Lockheed Martin and its partners have offered a $9.8bn offset programme including the building of half a dozen boxships at SSN, the state-controlled operator of the former Szczecin Shipyard.

It is now up to the Polish government to select which offset deals identified by Lockheed should contribute towards payment of the F-16s, Lockheed Martin spokesman Greg Hubbard tells TradeWinds.

Shipbuilding, a big export earner and employer in Poland, is thought to stand a good chance of being chosen. The industry's problems and state involvement in SSN makes it even more likely.

Hubbard says if shipbuilding is a priority, then Lockheed Martin would find buyers for the containerships and assist in supplying finance during the construction phase. This could prove crucial to SSN because banks have steered clear of shipbuilding after the collapse of Szczecin parent Porta Holding.

It has been reported that Lockheed Martin is interested in signing deals at SSN worth around $100m. The figure could be much higher depending on ship capacity. Half a dozen newbuildings of around 3,100-teu could cost closer to $180m and B-17, type 1,700-teu units $140m.

The overall aircraft tender has been described as the "deal of the century". Lockheed Martin beat off competition from Dassualt Aviation of France, manufacturer of the Mirage jet, and BAE Systems/Saab.

Dassault had talked about placing orders at SSN worth $170m.
