Ricardo Rapid Deployment Vehicle (RDV)
Development

Ricardo Vehicle Engineering of the UK have developed a new Rapid Deployment Vehicle (RDV), air-transportable in a C-130 Hercules aircraft and CH-47 Chinook helicopter, aimed mainly at the export market. The RDV is a product of Ricardo Vehicle Engineering's experience in developing specialist wheeled vehicles and their development and quantity production of weapon mounts for Land Rover 4 × 4-type vehicles for home and export. After studying a number of 4 × 4 vehicle types that were in quantity production or under development, Ricardo Vehicle Engineering selected the Swiss Bucher-Guyer Duro as the basis for the RDV as it met all potential user payload requirements as well as being in quantity production.
The Swiss Army has already received 3,000 Duro in 4 × 4 and 6 × 6 configurations, Venezuela received 300 vehicles (in batches of 150) and Nortel Networks has selected the Duro in its 6 × 6 configuration as the platform for the Cormorant communications system for the British Army. Full details of the Bucher-Guyer Duro 4 × 4 and 6 × 6 vehicles can be found in the Trucks section.

Description

The normal crew compliment for the RDV is two to three, with the driver sitting at the front left with steering and instruments carried over from the standard Duro. The vehicle commander sits to the right, leaving the rear free for the payload, though a third rearward-facing seat is positioned behind the passenger.
The basic Duro design has been retained wherever possible and Duro subsystems have also been kept as they are proven and already in quantity production. The standard production Duro has a three-person forward-control cab but Bucher-Guyer has recently developed a lower-profile central-driving configuration and this was the version selected for the RDV.
The two main design features of the Duro's welded hollow profile steel torsion-resistant chassis are the use of rigid De Dion axles with patented stabilisers and permanent all-wheel drive with Torsen self-locking differentials.
The front axle has a coil spring and gas-pressure damper fitted to a suspension unit and Cellasto supplementary springs. The rear axle has two coil springs and a gas-pressure damper on each side with Cellasto supplementary springs. Further, a Bucher stabiliser is mounted on both sides of the central axle cross-brace.
The main brakes are dual-circuit anti-lock with a hydraulic booster operating a spring-loaded parking brake on the rear disc brakes. Tyres are Michelin XZL 275/80R 20.
The body will be made with light alloys; the passenger compartment floors, engine cover, rear wheel arches and the bonnet of composite construction. The load-carrying areas will be of a light alloy chequer-plate or composite material. The RDV is fitted with a further development of the Weapon Mount Installation Kit (WMIK) originally developed by Ricardo Vehicle Engineering for installation on Land Rover Defender 4 × 4 vehicles. WMIK can be fitted with 5.56 mm, 7.62 mm and 12.7 mm machine guns, a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher or a Euromissile MILAN anti-tank guided weapon. The weapon can traverse through a full 360º with lock at 15º intervals.
The RDV is powered by a Cummins ISBe 185 EURO III emissions compliant six-cylinder turbocharged diesel developing 185 hp at 2,500 rpm. This is coupled to an Allison 1000-series five-speed automatic transmission and Bucher two-speed transfer box. The vehicle's maximum speed in high range is 110 km/h and in low range 55 km/h. With a combat weight of 5,500 kg, this gives a power-to-weight ratio of 33.6 hp/tonne.
The RDV can also be fitted with a number of kits, which have already been developed and built in production quantities for other applications. These include a Crew Protection Weapon Post for the vehicle commander that can be fitted with a 5.56 mm or 7.62 mm machine gun, height-adjustable seat for the crew commander, rear pannier to hold an additional 80 kg, camouflage net stowage basket, wire cutter and floor armour among other options.
